In April 2014, our trustees ran into Wambugu at a half marathon in Pardubice, Czech Republic – little did they know about the impact their conversation could have on so many lives. A random conversation led them to learn about how Wambugu and his wife opened their home to orphans in Kenya who had lost their parents to HIV/AIDS.
Our foundation sees no geographic boundaries and invites everyone from all backgrounds to unite in this cause. There are no boundaries when it comes to the love for cricket, and there are no boundaries for the incredible change we can make if we all come together.
Our trustees have committed a lot of their time fundraising for a variety of charities, but this project was special. They couldn’t even begin to imagine how hard it must be to take care of so many children solely through Wambugu’s earnings as a runner.
“After hearing Wambugu’s story, we couldn’t simply turn a blind eye to the harsh reality of these children. These children needed a safe and clean place to call home. We were determined to make that happen.”
Throughout 2014, the trustees carried out small fundraising events to pay for the children’s school fees. One day, an unexpected phone call from the authorities in Kenya ordered Wambugu to close down his home due to lack of funding.
This incident triggered a desire within our trustees to start an official foundation to raise money and accomplish Wambugu’s mission.
“We believe that we can unlock the potential of every child and help them escape the poverty cycle. We are dedicated to improve the quality of life for every individual.”
We work with children who are orphaned, abandoned or whose families are unable to care for them. The Alt Cricket Foundation is focused on the areas of greatest need, and in the ways in which we, as a community, can do the most good.
“Our vision is to provide these children with the education and training they need to reintegrate into their community as capable members of society.”
The Alt Cricket Foundation is committed to conducting our programs and operations in a manner that keeps children safe and protects them from harm. We insist on 100% accountability for safeguarding the children we are privileged enough to serve. We have clear procedures to prevent, report and respond to any risks to children.
No matter the challenge, we always put children first in everything we do. Ensuring their safety and well-being is a promise we make to them and our supporters alike.
“Our trustees at The Alt Cricket Foundation have many aspirations to join hands with those who need our help. One step at a time, we hope to make a difference.”
